| Sri Lanka: 8th ICAAP meeting to evoke on AIDS prevention

| The 8th International Congress on AIDS in the Asia and the Pacific ((8th ICAAP) will be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 19th to 23rd August under the theme of ‘Waves of Change- Waves of Hope’. The event will be inaugurated on 19 August with the participation of the President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa. |

| The ICCAP meeting is an event which deals with achieving meaningful exchanges of expertise, experiences, advances, lessons learnt, challenges faced and successes achieved in HIV/AIDS programmes, empower and strengthen political, community and business leadership, adopting a consultative, collaborative and participatory approach, form meaningful and sustainable partnerships between stakeholders at all levels, showcase achievements and successes and share best practices, promote equal access to prevention, support, treatment and care for all people. |

| “This would be a great opportunity for Sri Lanka to showcase to the international community how Sri Lanka has attained the lowest prevalence in South Asia for the HIV infected, through our cultural decorum, free medical facilities given to the infected etc.,” said the Minister of Health and Nutrition Nimal Siripala De Silva. |

| Minister Silva stated this addressing the media today at Colombo on the preparations to hold the 8th ICAAP. |
|
| Minister Silva stated that it is very important to ensure that communities that are infected, affected and vulnerable to HIV/AIDS and their families are free from stigmatization, marginalization and discrimination by addressing political, social, economic and cultural barriers and working towards societies in which they can enjoy the full range of human rights and protections as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and associated Protocols. |

| It is expected that more than 2000 delegates will attend to the meeting representing more than 60 countries such as Afgenistan, Australia, Austria, Costa Rica, Canada, China, Japan, India, Pakistan, United States, Nepal, and Vietnam etc. |

| Added to that more than 100 guest speakers are also scheduled to attend the occasion. |
|
| Speaking at the briefing, a member of the Co-chairs, Desamanya Prof. A.H. Sheriffdeen stated that they look forward to the 8th ICAAP, as a platform and the impetus, to significantly reduce the current gap between promise and fulfillment, the UNGASS Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS. |

| He added that Dealing with AIDS in Asia and the Pacific will need committed leadership and the building of strong partnerships, among all stakeholders involved. |
|
| “The past ICAAP’s, have been crucial meeting points between political leaders, affected communities and researchers, from the Asia-Pacific region. The Congresses have advanced the cause, while making important recommendations to increase the strengths, capacity and financial resources of humans and institutions, enhance advocacy and renew global commitment against AIDS” said Prof. Sheriffdeen. |

| Meanwhile, in Sri Lanka ICAAP has provided 280 international participants scholarships to attend the 8th ICAAP. These selections have been made from over 1000 applicants through a rigorous scoring system. |
