| NATIONAL MEDIA ADVOCACY WORKSHOP |

| Over the last year CHARCA in association with CFAR and Samyak Foundation has
organised district level media advocacy workshops that aimed at both
informing the media about issues relating to HIV/AIDS and generating dialogue
and initiative to communicate these issues in an effective and appropriate
manner. |

| The national media advocacy workshop brought together HIV experts,
nationally renowned journalists as well as media representatives from all six
CHARCA districts. Mr. Rahul Dev of Samyak conducted the proceedings. |

| Ms. Ambika Soni, Honourable Minister for Tourism inaugurated the proceedings
and spoke of the relevance of effective HIV communication, and mentioned
that a social vaccine of information, education and communication is a vastly
important tool in tackling the epidemic. Director General NACO, Ms. Sujatha
Rao,Country coordinator UNAIDS, Mr. Denis Broun, and Mr. Alankar Malviya,
National Project Coordinator, CHARCA were some of the other distinguished
guests who spoke eloquently on the crucial need for positive media in the
response to HIV/AIDS. |

| The day’s sessions included HIV experts talking about the facts and figures that
make this epidemic so daunting, especially in the Indian cultural context. |

| The conference concluded with Mr. Upahar Pramanik, CHARCA Secretariat
offering a vote of thanks and commending everyone for their valuable and
enthusiastic participation. Various district team members also spoke briefly
about the benefit of the conference to build confidence and share experiences
among the peer educators and thanked the Secretariat for organising it. The
conference proved successful in enabling a forum for learning and discussion,
which ultimately built the capacities of the peer educators’. |
